Karnataka govt to bring law to ‘free Hindu temples’: CM Bommai

Thursday, December 30, 2021

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday said his government will bring in a law to “free Hindu temples” from laws and rules that control them at present.

Addressing the state BJP executive, he said "Our government will bring in a law to this effect before the budget session. We will free our temples from laws and conditions."

The Chief Minister also stated that once the anti-conversion bill becomes law, the government will form a special task force to implement it.

"By ensuring that the anti-conversion bill becomes an Act in the days to come, I will also constitute a special task force for its implementation," he said.

This is seen as another major move by the Bommai government after the contentious "Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Bill, 2021," also known as the "anti-conversion bill," was passed in the legislative assembly during the recent legislative session in Belagavi.

The bill is yet to become a law as it is pending for tabling and passage in the Legislative Council.

CM Bommai further said that the government was able to give momentum to the long-pending anti-conversion bill because the BJP was committed to it.
